P.R.I.C.E. is a common acronym for the treatment of injuries and foot and ankle pain used by physicians. Usually this is done for the first 72 hours after an injury, however, chronic persistent injuries will benefit from this treatment as well. So what does PRICE stand for?
P stands for protection! This can be in many forms including: fiberglass cast, Fracture walking boot, ankle or foot brace, or a supportive athletic shoe. The idea is to prevent pain and control the area of injury to allow the body to heal itself.
R stands for rest! This can be the most challenging aspect of the treatment process. In the age of fast food and rapid delivery systems, the body still takes time to heal itself. How long depends upon how severe the injury is the more severe the injury, the longer the need for rest.
I stands for Ice! When an injury occurs the body begins to heal through a process called inflammation. This process occurs in the general area of the injury and is very important, however, most of the time the body produces too much inflammation. Then the area becomes swollen and painful. Ice will reduce the inflammation and control the swelling and pain to the area.
C stands for compression! Compression will reduce the swelling associated with injury and decrease the pain associated.
E stands for elevation! To control the swelling and pain, getting the area of injury approximately four inches above the heart is extremely helpful.
In Conclusion, If one receives an injury to the foot or ankle, that individual should seek medical attention immediately, and utilize the PRICE method to optimize their recovery.
